Itineraries
The Tyrol of our home
Bozen, as the locals call it, is the capital of Trentino Alto Adige and the gateway to the Dolomites. Nestled in the mountains this delightful town is the sum of a border past, where
you can breathe the air of neighbouring Austria that has profoundly influenced not only the customs and uses but also the language.
For everyone who loves the mountains, pristine air, long walks, snow-covered valleys and picturesque Christmas landscapes, Bolzano is an obligatory stop between flowered balconies and
slate stone sloping roofs.
Bolzano, a destination at the foot of the mountains
Bolzano rises on an alpine plateau at the foot of the Dolomites and, as such, enchants the visitor for the places of uncontaminated beauty.
The city comes across as a small jewel, nestled in the mountains, rich in greenery and rivers. The heart of the city is Piazza Walther, elegant for its nineteenth-century
architecture, historic cafés, streetlights and fascinating galleries, and homonymous central statue. This square hosts the famous Christmas merchant every year, an
international tourist destination, flooding it with stalls, colours, lights, perfumes, flavours and music. Right here is the city's Cathedral, dedicated to
Santa Maria Assunta, in Romanesque-Gothic style. The peculiarity of this building is its splendid majolica roof while inside you can admire the fourteenth-century frescoes
and a wooden crucifix.
A few steps away is the Dominican Church, built in 1272 and enriched by extraordinary frescoes of Giotto's school in the two chapels of San Giovanni and Santa Caterina.
Continuing the tour, a few hundred metres away, you will find the mediaeval Piazza delle Erbe, a historic place of trade and commerce still today home to the daily market
of fruit, vegetables and food that crowds during the day this place full of scents and genuine local products. In the centre of the square is the beautiful Fountain of Neptune
and along the perimeter historical buildings such as Palazzo Mercantile and the Old Town Hall. The spiritual interests were instead cultivated in the nearby
Franciscan convent, to be visited to enjoy the beautiful fourteenth-century cloister in Gothic style.
From the square, take via dei Portici, an ancient street, typical and renowned for its late Gothic buildings with windowed balconies called bovindi.
A short distance away you will find, along a small cross, Piazza del Grano where the past peaks in the toponymy: here in fact the wheat was weighed in the house of the
Weigh that brings back the frescoes in the building's façade.
If after the walk you want to refuel, try via dei Bottai, the place par excellence of Bolzano catering identified by the many wrought iron signs on the premises.
For any reason whatsoever, do not miss a genuine slice of the typical local dessert, the apple strudel accompanied by fresh cream.
At the end of the break, you will be ready for the South Tyrol Archaeological Museum where Otzi, the oldest natural mummy ever discovered is located. It was discovered
accidentally by a couple of mountaineers in 1991, a discovery of extraordinary historical value to study life during the copper age.
The territory of Bolzano is famous not only for its beautiful landscapes but also for the numerous castles that are located in the surroundings. About 40 km from the city, and therefore
easily accessible with your rental car, we cite Roncolo Castle surrounded by greenery and located on a rocky outcrop, also nicknamed the Illustrated Manor for the exceptional
richness of the frescoes on the walls: court life, knightly tournaments, hunting scenes, family life, receptions and courteous love, a cross-section of mediaeval traditions and customs that
are more represented than ever in these places.
