Routes and travel ideas
Bari is the capital of Puglia. Those who arrive will immediately have the sensation of being catapulted into a film with an ancient and true scenography between the
scents of the sea and the colours of the sun.
Bari city
Overlooking the Adriatic Sea, in the middle of a panoramic promontory, Bari opens to the eyes of travellers as an intricate and labyrinthine set of streets, alleys and squares
that determine its absolute typicality. Here the world has stopped, crystallised as in a painting with lively Mediterranean colours and told to visitors thanks to the ancient
and enchanted beauty of one of the most beautiful historic centres in Italy. At the edge of the ancient city stands the Norman Swabian castle, an imposing and
austere bulwark to defend the city and today a museum pole. From here, you enter the heart of old Bari, the soul of the city and, getting lost in the narrow streets, you will
come across the typical drying racks that expose the Apulian pasta to the sun: orecchiette and cavatelli, the real pride of the city worked by the wise hands of elderly Bari
women. But the real symbol of the city is the papal Basilica of San Nicola, a wonderful and dazzling example of Apulian Romanesque, where the relics of the
patron saint to whom all the people of Bari are particularly devoted are still preserved in the crypt. Equally imposing is the Cathedral of the city, the Cathedral
of San Sabino, also Romanesque, which captivates its visitors with the magic of the ancient rose window which is perfectly reflected during the summer solstice,
until it matches the mosaic floor of the church.
You cannot miss the characteristic promenade, a riot of dazzling light and small wooden boats, the gozzi, which animate this cheerful and common area of
the city with the voices of the fishermen from where, easily, you can reach Piazza Farnese with the Murat, a neighbourhood and exhibition space for local crafts,
and the Teatro Margherita, now a museum of contemporary art. Finally, a visit to the temple of Apulian opera, the Teatro Petruzzelli, a real
institution for fans of the genre, is a must.
And in the evening? Enjoy the dusk while walking among the bars and taverns of the historic centre: here the focaccia and panzerotto will win you over at the first taste!
Outside the city
Those who land in Bari cannot absolutely miss its surroundings rich in history and wonderful landscapes that make Puglia one of the most interesting tourist regions in Italy.
Hence, a rental car certainly becomes the most comfortable and practical solution to visit it freely and autonomously. The surroundings of Bari offer an unmissable glimpse of
ancient history where it is easy to imagine oneself in a distant time, out of the chaos and frenzy of the city, immersed in the silence and peace of picturesque alleys cared
for in every detail where traditions and customs of this still emerge today so hospitable people. An example for all is Trani, built already in the Byzantine
era, with its square and the stupendous cathedral that dominates the space overlooking a crystalline sea. From here, you can continue to Castel del Monte, an
imposing and iconic building commissioned by Frederick II of Swabia in 1240 with a typical octagonal structure in the heart of the Murge plateau.
Continuing the tour, immersed
in a string of small villages and villages with a mediaeval atmosphere, you reach Polignano a Mare, a small jewel of beauty, overlooking the sea, full of suggestive
views and crystal-clear coves, famous not only for its beauty breathtaking of the place but also for being the birthplace of the singer Domenico Modugno. Proceeding along your path
we suggest an unforgettable stop: the villages of Alberobello and Locorotondo. This is the soul of the region, where you can fall madly in love with its traditions.
Now Unesco heritage, Alberobello winds through a series of alleys where the Trulli are the masters, ancient houses with a characteristic conical construction that tell of the life
and a peasant culture that continues to strive over the centuries. And here is Locorotondo, elected one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, with its dazzling white houses almost
splitting the blue of the sky and the green of the countryside. The structure of the town, with a circular plan, offers glimpses of rare and ancient beauty in the embroidery of niches,
arcades, galleries and courtyards as far as the eye can see. Art, culture, history and sea meet in Monopoli, here you can taste the Apulian cuisine and all the recipes
based on fresh fish that the numerous fishing boats land at the port every day, you will have enough for the drunkenness of true and healthy Apulian life!
